If you rip your video DVDs or save them as ISO images, you will be able to prevent the original discs from being damaged. You can just play a copy, while the original will stay safe in its case. Unfortunately, this requires a lot of disk space, especially if there are dual layer DVDs involved. With DVD Shrink 2012, free space will not be an issue. Like its name suggests, the software is capable of compressing the contents of your DVDs, so they will take up less space.

The software's setup file is roughly 30 MB large and the installation process will take about a minute. It works on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, in both 32 and 64-bit versions. DVD Shrink 2012 is not too demanding when it comes to system requirements, so you will not have to upgrade your hardware anytime soon.

The core features are presented on a compact interface and their options will appear on separate windows. The software lets you shrink an entire DVD, including menus, titles and audio tracks. After selecting your DVD, its audio tracks and subtitles will be displayed in a tree menu and you will be able to choose which ones to keep or discard.

It is also possible to reauthor a DVD, by selecting one or more chapters. This is done on a similar window, but you will find more items in the tree menu, once you select a DVD. Before you start the shrinking process, you can use a slider to set a compression level. Obviously, compressing a movie means sacrificing quality. While moving the slider towards more or less compression, the software will let you know if the quality is high, recommended or low.

DVD Shrink 2012 makes it possible to convert individual chapters from a DVD. This is done on a different window, where you need to select a DVD, click a button to analyze it and select the chapters you want to convert. When the process is complete, the software will save them as a single video file. You can select different output formats, like MP4, iPod, iPhone, Android or PSP. When converting video files, you will find more output formats, including AVI, FLV, 3GP and more.

Pros

You can shrink DVDs and set your own compression level. Additionally, the software lets you decide what audio tracks or other items to keep. You can also use DVD Shrink 2012 to extract and convert individual chapters from a DVD or convert video files from your hard drive.

Cons

The trial version can be used for a limited number of times. If you want to back up your DVD movies, DVD Shrink 2012 will help you save valuable disk space. It lets you compress your movies and set the balance between compression and quality.
